Are Double Doodles Hypoallergenic?

Double Doodles, a crossbreed between two doodle breeds (often Labradoodles and Goldendoodles), are sometimes marketed as hypoallergenic due to the influence of the Poodle’s coat characteristics in their lineage. Poodles are known for their curly, low-shedding coats, which can produce less dander and hair in the environment compared to many other breeds. This trait can make doodle breeds more suitable for individuals with mild allergies.

However, it’s important to remember that no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic. The coat type of a Double Doodle can vary significantly, even within the same litter, ranging from curly and similar to a Poodle’s, to wavy or straight, resembling more closely the Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever parent. This variation affects the degree of shedding and, consequently, the potential for allergen release.

Dogs & Allergies – A Quick Overview

Allergies in humans from dogs are commonly triggered by dander, saliva and urine. The proteins present in these allergens can cause reactions ranging from mild to severe in sensitive individuals. Understanding the nature of these allergens is essential in considering a pet for a home with allergy sufferers.

Do 100% Hypoallergenic Dogs Exist?

The term ‘hypoallergenic’ often misleads people to believe in the existence of completely allergy-free dogs. However, the reality is that no dog breed is 100% hypoallergenic. Some breeds, due to their coat type and shedding patterns, may produce fewer allergens or retain them to a lesser extent, making them more suitable for allergy sufferers.

Factors that Affect Allergy Levels in Double Doodles

Several factors influence the level of allergens a Double Doodle may produce. Regular grooming and bathing can significantly reduce the amount of dander and hair in the environment. The dog’s diet and overall health also play a role in skin and coat health, thereby affecting dander production.

Do Double Doodles Shed?

While Double Doodles are often less shedding than many other breeds, they do shed to some extent.

Other Options for Allergy Sufferers?

For those with severe allergies, other pet options or dog breeds might be more suitable. This part can provide an overview of truly hypoallergenic breeds and alternative pets for allergy sufferers, like hairless cat breeds or other small animals known for minimal allergen production.
