Height:51 cm (20 inches).
Body Length:51-58 cm (20-23 inches).

How Big Are Samoyeds Compared to Other Breeds?

Samoyeds stand out with their fluffy white coats and smiling faces, positioning them in the medium to large category among dog breeds. They are larger and more robust than smaller spitz breeds like the American Eskimo Dog or the Pomeranian, yet they are generally not as massive as the largest working breeds such as the Saint Bernard or Newfoundland. This size allows them to be versatile, capable of agility and endurance, yet still manageable for most families. Their stature reflects their origins as hardy sled dogs, requiring a balance of strength, agility, and endurance, setting them apart from both smaller companion breeds and larger working breeds.

How Much Variation in Size Is There Amongst Different Samoyeds?

There is some variation in size among Samoyeds, with males typically larger than females. They can vary in weight from about 50 to 60 pounds for females and 65 to 75 pounds for males. To determine if a Samoyed is at a healthy weight, you should be able to feel but not see their ribs without pressing hard, and they should have a visible waist when viewed from above. The thick coat can sometimes obscure weight issues, so it’s important to use hands-on assessment.

When do Samoyeds Stop Growing?

Samoyeds are considered fully grown by the time they are 18 to 24 months old. However, they will reach their full height before they reach their full weight. As a puppy, a Samoyed will go through rapid growth spurts and it is important to feed them a balanced diet to ensure they reach their full potential size.

During their first year of life, Samoyed puppies grow rapidly and their weight can increase by around 2 kg (4.5 pounds) per month. They usually reach their full height by around 12 to 16 months of age, after which their growth rate slows down. However, they may continue to gain weight until they are around 18 to 24 months old.

Can You Predict the Size of Samoyeds When They are Puppies?

While it is not possible to predict the exact size of a Samoyed puppy, you can make an estimate based on their parents’ size. Samoyeds tend to have consistent size and weight within their breed, so if you know the size of the parents, you can estimate the size of the puppy.
